2024 Sundance Film Festival: 10 Movies To Be Excited About

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival is here! The Sundance Film Festival is my favorite film festival in the world. I have been attending the festival since 2011 and love it every single year I go. I love the atmosphere, the focus and love of cinema throughout the festival, and of course, the movies. I love the diversity of films at the festival. I love discovering new, talented filmmakers, actors, and creatives throughout the festival and see up-and-coming grow as filmmakers and as talents.

I will once again be covering the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and while there are many movies I want to see, the films listed below are the ones I am most excited for. Here are the movies exciting movies playing at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Freaky Tales (Ryan Fleck, Anna Boden)

What It’s About: In 1987 Oakland, a mysterious force guides The Town’s underdogs in four interconnected tales: Teen punks defend their turf against Nazi skinheads, a rap duo battles for hip-hop immortality, a weary henchman gets a shot at redemption, and an NBA All-Star settles the score. Basically another day in the Bay.

Why I’m Excited: Directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden make their return to Sundance in this Bay Area crime drama that is probably the most high-profile film of this year’s festival.

 

Ghostlight (Alex Thompson, Kelly O’Sullivan)

What It’s About: When a construction worker unexpectedly joins a local theater’s production of Romeo and Juliet, the drama onstage starts to mirror his own life.

Why I’m Excited: Having enjoyed their 2019 indie gem Saint Frances, I am excited to see what directors Alex Thompson and Kelly O’Sullivan have in store for us this time around.

 

Handling the Undead (Thea Hvistendahl)

What It’s About: On a hot summer day in Oslo, the newly dead awaken. Three families faced with loss try to figure out what this resurrection means and if their loved ones really are back. Based on the book by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

Why I’m Excited: Starring Reinat Reinsva, one of the most exciting up-and-coming actresses working today, Handling the Undead sounds like an eerie film from the writer of Let the Right One In.

 

I Saw the TV Glow (Jane Schoenbrun)

What It’s About: Teenager Owen is just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show–a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack.

Why I’m Excited: We’re All Going to the World’s Fair director Jane Schoenbrun returns for their sophomore film featuring an all-star cast.

 

Love Lies Bleeding (Rose Glass)

What It’s About: Reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.

Why I’m Excited: Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian, and Ed Harris star in the new crime thriller from A24 that also happens to have a stunning trailer.

 

My Old Ass (Megan Park)

What It’s About: The summer before college, bright-yet-irreverent Elliott comes face-to-face with her older self during a mushroom trip. The encounter spurs a funny and heartfelt journey of self-discovery and first love as Elliott prepares to leave her childhood home.

Why I’m Excited: Following the success of her chilling debut The Fallout, director Megan Park changes course with this coming-of-age dramedy.

 

Presence (Steven Soderbergh)

What It’s About: A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.

Why I’m Excited: Steven Soderbergh is one of my favorite directors and he’s been on a great run recently with films like No Sudden Move and KIMI. I’m betting Presence is another Soderbergh hit.

 

Skywalkers: A Love Story (Jeff Zimbalist)

What It’s About: To save their career and relationship, a daredevil couple journey across the globe to climb the world’s last super skyscraper and perform a bold acrobatic stunt on the spire.

Why I’m Excited: I’m hoping this documentary takes us to new heights to show us some of the death-defying stunts this couple goes through. This is one I’ll need to see on the big screen.

 

Sujo (Astrid Rondero, Fernanda Valadez)

What It’s About: When a cartel gunman is killed, he leaves behind Sujo, his beloved 4-year-old son. The shadow of violence surrounds Sujo during each stage of his life in the isolated Mexican countryside. As he grows into a man, Sujo finds that fulfilling his father’s destiny may be inescapable.

Why I’m Excited: Every year there is a movie I know not a lot about, but its synopsis or festival image hooks me. I don’t know much about Sujo besides the plot, but it sounds like a gripping film about legacy and our inherent sins.

 

Your Monster (Caroline Lindy)

What It’s About: After her life falls apart, soft-spoken actress Laura Franco finds her voice again when she meets a terrifying, yet weirdly charming, monster living in her closet

Why I’m Excited: Your Monster boasts a fun and inventive premise and stars Melissa Berera, who is becoming one of the best horror actors we have right now.
